Business Central is the latest generation of Microsoft Dynamics NAV. It is offered in Microsoft's public cloud and can be operated as a public or private cloud version or on-premises. The new version of the ERP software Dynamics NAV not only has new features and improvements, but also a new name: Dynamics 365 Business Central. The Dynamic NAV product line will be continued under the title Dynamics 365 Business Central.

Business Central is an all-in-one business solution for financial management, merchandise management, marketing & sales and customer service. There is therefore no difference in terms of the basic functions of Business Central and NAV. Customers who are already using Dynamics NAV can continue to use it in the future. New customers can only purchase Dynamics NAV until March 31, 2019, after which only Business Central (on-premises) can be purchased.

With Business Central, Microsoft is switching from the concurrent user model to the named user model. With the former, the number of people using the software at the same time is decisive for the users to be licensed. With the named user model, everyone who uses Business Central must be created in the system and is considered a separate user. Existing Dynamics NAV customers with an active enhancement plan up to and including version 2018 can continue to purchase concurrent users.

The user interface, including the color scheme, is tidier than that of the previous version. The menu is no longer aligned on the left. Dynamics 365 Business Central therefore looks more like the Microsoft system, such as the Office suite.

Word, Excel and Outlook etc. are integrated by Dynamics 365 Business Central in both the cloud and on-premises versions. For example, Word and Outlook can be used to process orders and create invoices or cost estimates.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central can be customized with the help of extensions. This allows individual functions to be adapted, but also entire areas to be tailored to the individual requirements of the user. The extensions are easily connected to the base system via internal program interfaces.

Extensions are a good way of programming independently of the program core, the kernel. Individual functions, modules or entire parts of the software can be modified or replaced thanks to extensions. The consistent use of extensions for all extensions significantly reduces the effort required for future upgrades. In the cloud version, these are even fully automated.

Microsoft enables users to operate Dynamics 365 Business Central in private and public clouds or on-premises. Microsoft also offers Business Central as Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) via its own public cloud.
